Frederick Mutual Insurance Company has an exciting opportunity for the right individual to join our growing Claim Team in Frederick, Maryland as an Inside Property Claim Representative. The successful candidate should be prepared to demonstrate the
following experience and requirements:

The position is responsible for the prompt and thorough investigation of routine to complex Personal and Commercial Lines Property Claims. This is an office position involving assignments to independent adjusters as well as desk reviews and estimating of less complex property losses.
Job Functions:

  • Initiates prompt and courteous contact with insureds, witnesses, Public Adjusters and agency contacts to ascertain information about claims
  • Investigates personal and commercial lines moderate to complex property claims in compliance with established state laws, regulations and company standards
  • Must adhere to high standards of professional conduct consistent with delivery of superior service to internal and external customers
  • Timely identification, analysis and resolution of coverage issues
  • Prepares and distributes Reservation of Rights letters, disclaimer and denial letters
  • Timely and thorough investigation of the facts of the loss
  • Ability to analyze independent adjuster reports and estimates, and draft estimates for less complex losses over the phone and internet
  • Sets timely, accurate reserves in compliance with company reserving philosophy and guidelines
  • Identifies and investigates opportunities for recovery and pursues them vigorously
  • Maintains a consistent adherence to the claim diary system
  • Meticulously documents claim files
  • Prepares property damage evaluations and Large Loss Reports and presents them in a large loss conference to the Executive Management Team
  • Evaluates, negotiates and settle claims within a delegated authority
  • Utilizes proper claim handling techniques to manage and control expenses
  • Capable at communicating at all levels of the organization
  • Communicates with other departments in the company to share risk reports
  • Works as a member of the larger team to develop relationships with internal and external customers to ensure that our company continues to strengthen and grow
  • Maintains current knowledge of insurance and applicable products and services through Continuing Education
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned and directed with a sense of urgency and ownership
  • Multi-line experience is a plus

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of Personal and Commercial Lines claims handling experience
  • Proficient with using and interpreting Xactimate and Xactanalysis software
  • Insurance designations preferred, CPCU and/or AIC
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Excellent communication & organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and maintain a current case load

Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter

Location Frederick, MD
Job Information

Essential Functions:

  • Profitably underwrite and price commercial accounts. Manage all assigned agencies and territory to profit and growth targets.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Review insurance applications for class acceptability.
    •  Accounts may be larger and more complex given the more extensive experience of a Senior Underwriter.
  •  Ensure adherence to company guidelines.
  •  Secure and review all available resources appropriate to size and complexity of risk.
    • Examples would be website, financials, loss control survey, MVR’s, etc.
  • Appropriately document account file when outside of guidelines.
  • Secure timely pre-approval when exceeding individual authority.
  • Document underwriting and pricing decisions as to “Why”.
  • Know and adhere to all regulatory positions.
  • Know our treaties and never write excluded operations.
  • Visit and build relationships with assigned agencies.
    • Assigned agencies may be more demanding and complex than average agent.
  • Actively participate as a trainee and trainer as assigned by AVP.
  • Manage profitability of agents and territory with direction from AVP.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education and/or Experience – Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university; at least 8 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Language Skills – Ability to read and interpret industry and professional publications. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Mathematical Skills – Ability to understand and work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, ratios, discounts, percentages, area, and proportions.
  • Reasoning Ability – Ability to carry out instructions using common sense and a logical approach. Ability to deal with problems using a rational and disciplined approach.
  • Professional Designations – Continuous pursuit of professional training and designations. CPCU and/or ARM designation preferred.
  • Core Competencies – Risk taker, decisive, team player, positive, adaptable, goal oriented.

Working conditions:

  • Typical office environment with adequate lighting and moderate noise levels.
  • Employee will occasionally travel to agent’s offices, seminars, and conferences where the working conditions may vary.

Physical requirements:

  • This position frequently requires the employee to sit and use a computer keyboard and view a computer monitor.
  • The employee is also occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, drive a car, talk, and listen.
  • The employee may have to occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds.

Casualty Claim Specialist

Job Functions:

  • Investigates personal and commercial lines serious injury, complex claims and lawsuits in compliance with established state requirements and company standards
  • Provides exceptional quality service to our customers
  • Initiates contact with insureds, claimants, medical providers, witnesses and attorneys to ascertain information about claims and lawsuits
  • Resolves questions on coverage including additional insured, hold harmless and contractual indemnification requests and demands
  • Resolves questions on liability, compensability and claim value
  • Prepares and distributes Reservation of Rights letters, disclaimer and denial letters
  • Meticulously documents claim files
  • Sets timely, accurate reserves in compliance with company reserving philosophy and guidelines
  • Collaborates with defense counsel on action plans, litigation and proactive resolution strategies
  • Attends depositions, hearings, mediations, settlement conferences and trials
  • Identifies and investigates opportunities for recovery and pursues them vigorously
  • Prepares bodily injury and property damage evaluations and presents them in a large loss conference to the Executive Management Team
  • Negotiates, settles and resolves claims and lawsuits to fair and equitable settlements
  • Work within various state laws, regulations, and fair claims practice acts within the states we currently operate
  • Utilizes proper litigation management techniques to manage and control litigation expenses
  • Capable at communicating at all levels of the organization
  • Communicates with other departments in the company to share risk reports
  • Works as a member of the larger team to develop relationships with internal and external customers to ensure that our company continues to strengthen and grow
  • Handles all other tasks assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Ten years of claims handling experience
  • Insurance designations preferred, CPCU and/or AIC
  • 5 years litigation experience handling both Personal and Commercial lines Bodily Injury claims
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent communication & organizational skills

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Superior knowledge of claims best practices
  • Ability to resolve the most serious and complex liability claims
  • Proven ability and experience at resolving bodily injury claims on a “first call” basis via face to face and telephonic negotiations
  • Excellent knowledge of insurance contacts, medical terminology and legal aspects of court procedures
  • High standards of professional conduct
  • Strong knowledge of computers and claims systems
  • Exceptional organizational, written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent investigative and problem-solving abilities
  • Travel required; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle history report will be required
